FLIPR
CLARIN ERIC project ‘Formulaic Language Infrastructure for Processing and learning Research’ (FLIPR)
As a follow-up to the successful international workshop we organized in Nijmegen in June 2018 in the framework of the NWO project Idiomatic Second Language Acquisition (http://isla.ruhosting.nl), we prepared an application for a CLARIN ERIC project called ‘Formulaic Language Infrastructure for Processing and learning Research’ (FLIPR), which was accepted for funding by CLARIN ERIC.
The aim of this project is to bring together an interdisciplinary group of experts in formulaic language research to discuss the development of a central database, to set up a plan to collect existing and new data and to include these in the CLARIN infrastructure.
Survey
As a first step we would like to find out what data people have and establish their willingness to make it available. In addition, we would like to gather information about how data was collected, e.g. how questions about familiarity were framed and the scale that was used to probe it. This will allow us to make suggestions about how future data might be collected to ensure comparability across studies.
Examples of ‘Formulaic Language’ (FL) are idioms, binomials, multiword expressions (MWEs), etc.
If you have data on formulaic language, we would appreciate it if you completed the survey available at the following link:
https://nottingham.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/formulaic-language-survey
Also, please pass on the link to anyone you know who is working on formulaic language.
Workshop
On 26-27 March we are having a workshop in Nottingham. We are bringing together an interdisciplinary group of experts in formulaic language research to discuss the development of a central database. The aim is to take stock of existing data and develop guidelines for standardization for new data with the goal of including all data on formulaic language in the CLARIN infrastructure.
